E3 STEM/Knights Of The Valley Outreach Event

Below is an outline for a really unique
outreach effort for the
AVHS FIRST Robotics team - Knights Of The Valley.

This is an E3 STEM & FIRST Robotics outreach effort as it is being led by E3 STEM students on the team.

Squire Outreach Program

What: The Apple Valley High School FIRST Robotics team will recruit elementary school students to act as scouts for their team at their upcoming regional competition being held in Mariucci Arena on the U of M camp April 7-9. The Knights would welcome these students on to their team as squire scouts. The squires would help the Knights scout other teams by pit and match scouting. Members of the Knights will help their young squires to perform these duties. Squire = a young nobleman acting as an attendant to a knight before becoming a knight himself/herself.

Who: Students at Southview who work with Ms. Mads0n in the Gifted & Talented program. Apple Valley High School Knights Of The Valley FIRST Robotics team.

When: The Squires would travel to the competition on the morning of Friday, April 8 to support their Knights Of The Valley by match scouting, pit scouting and cheering on their team. The Southview Squires would attend the competition from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm on April 8.

Why: The Knights believe they are fulfilling the ultimate Mission of FIRST by inspiring more young people to become excited about STEM fields through this program. The Knights will also learn a number of valuable lessons by having to prepare their squires to perform these scouting duties and leading them at the competition.
How:
  • ●  Members of the Knights will create a pit & match scouting forms and an information collection system that they will have their squires use at the competition.
  • ●  The Knight will create some kind of shirt or other items that will identify the Southview students as squire members of their team when they are at the tournament.
  • ●  They will meet with Ms. Madson from Southview to review these to ensure the system is clear and usable for her students.
  • ●  Members of the Knights of The Valley will visit Southview  to train their squires to perform these duties.
    • ○  The Knight will provide an complete overview of the 2016 competition including an explanation of the game, key strategies and basic rules.
    • ○  They will then share the scouting documents and have the students perform a mock pit scouting using the Knights and their robot as their target team.
    • ○  The squires will match scout a match or two on video from an FRC regional tournament that has already taken place
